Kumon Reviews
In this Kumon review, we will take a look at what Kumon is all about and help to make it clearer for you as well. Kumon is actually a type of mathematics that began fifty years ago in Japan. It was started by a man named Toru Kumon whose aim was to help his child t get better maths grades in school.
With Kumon math, you are able to pace yourself while you study. There is a sequence of worksheets that students have to work through. However, they will have to master one set of those worksheets before you can move on to the subsequent level. When students enter the program, they are not necessarily started at the same level they are in school. They are given a test at the beginning of the program and then they are started at a level where they can manage and then they progress to the next levels as they settle into the programme and increase in confidence until they master the subject.
What Kumon measures with respect to mastery is both the number of correct answers as well as the time in which they take to complete each worksheet. The student will get to the point where s/he is so versed on the topic that the time it takes them to complete the worksheet will be significantly less. They will then meet what is Kumon’s standard completion time with respect to proficiency and mastery of each level, and then they are allowed to move on to the other level.
Another difference with Kumon mathematics is that students are not strictly supervised completing their worksheet. What does happen is that the student will go to a Kumon centre to get their worksheets checked and to pick up new worksheets as well. The worksheets are taken back home where they are done by the students themselves, and then being corrected by their parents or guardians. When new topics are being introduced, this is done in a way that is in keeping with the pace that the student can manage and can be understood just from reading and going through the worksheet and its examples; with no other outside help.
What is really great about Kumon’ s method is its capacity to facilitate each child at their own pace of learning, and to meet them exactly at the level that they are so they will learn at their own pace and in their own time, without any undue pressure. Albeit this may sound like a laissez-faire way of learning, it has been proven that a majority of students who are in the Kumon program are actually at a level that is between 2-3 years above their school grade level.
Admittedly, Kumon mathematics can be a huge obligation for a family with respect to both time and money. All students in the program are expected to spend at least twenty minutes a day on your worksheets. However, this works in instilling discipline in your child as s/he is able to commit to something and learns to follow something through to its end.
